What Can the Machine Know of Soul?

I saved the image of a young woman connected to a "machine" for years before it became part of a collage. It's from the 1930's, actually used in the detailed study of the shape and size of the cranium as a supposed indication of character and mental abilities. Have we come much further along nearly a century later?
